A Homemade Softbox

Photographing subjects with a direct flash often produces harsh results with strong shadows, taking away from the artistic effect the picture could convey. The hard light produced by the flash can yield unwanted red-eye effects, dense and ugly shadows, and leave the photograph void of realistic lighting. Diffusing the light emitted by the flash is a better method to soften the hard light and surround the subject. Shooting images in direct sunlight will produce strong shadows as well. This is why cloudy days can provide better circumstances to shoot objects outdoors. Sunlight at dawn and dusk also provide better more favorable conditions to shoot outdoors because the light is less intense and at a lower angle.

This article is inspired by another article I read on FredMiranda.com. The author of the article describes a few simple concepts in constructing a softbox to soften the harsh light produced by a flash. What I found cool about the article is that the softbox can easily be created from objects lying around the house. The purpose of the softbox is to soften the direct light of the flash, dissipating the shadows. The result is more realistic lighting on the subject.

The Softbox I Created

In constructing my softbox, I collected cardboard, tissue paper, and tape. Using scissors and a knife, I cut out the cardboard to form a frame that resembled something similar to the author's. I then used white tissue paper to fill in my softbox, taping as little as needed. The end result is fully functional, but not the most aesthetically appealing. I am pleased with the results.

The Results

The three images above are all cropped, but not enhanced using Photoshop. Notice the shadows that each object casts. The softbox softens the photo, providing a more natural effect.

As useful as this homemade creation can be, it is fairly delicate, oblong, and large. It will not easily fit into a backpack nor a camera bag, and I am not quite sure I want to be seen in public shooting with it. There are commercially available reflectors and diffusers that may suit your needs as well, but creating something out of nothing also has its rewards.
